Our story

Purple Theory Records is a boutique label for instrumental lofi, started in Oslo, Norway, in 2023. The music comes from Norway, Sweden, Germany, South Korea, Japan, the United States and a good few other places, and a lot of it is people making records together. The emblem, two profiles facing each other with a star between them, is about exactly that.

Every release here is a record and a picture. The covers speak the same language: saturated pastels and cosmic blues, dreamlike landscapes, geometric forms, windows and doorways into somewhere else, set in quiet type on warm backgrounds. We think of the catalogue as a gallery as much as a discography, which is why this site lets you sort it by colour.

Most of it is lofi and chill beats, but the name was chosen to leave room. Ambient, modern electronic jazz, neo-soul and R&B all sit comfortably here. What ties the catalogue together is a distinct voice on each record, not a genre.

The label is run by three people who also make records here: Kristoffer Eikrem, a trumpet player and producer; Marius Grøtterud Egenes, who releases as Dokkemand and masters records as Egenes Mastering; and Milo Bruusgaard Wiik, who releases as HM Surf. All three have been on the artist side of a label contract, so the terms here are the ones we would want ourselves: fair contracts, you keep your rights, and a collaborative process from the artwork to the master. Sound quality and creative freedom come first, for established names and new ones alike.

Most of the catalogue is on Bandcamp, where buying a record pays the artist directly, and all of it is on the usual streaming services. The YouTube channel has longer mixes built from the catalogue.
